Day one
Sulgrave Manor and Fawsley Hall

Sulgrave Manor is the Washington ancestral home and is a perfect starting point for your journey in Northamptonshire. You can have a unique opportunity to view the house and dine by candlelight in the splendour of the Great Hall and stay locally at the magnificent Fawsley Hall
This is an ideal opportunity to experience how George Washington’s ancestors lived in England. This slice of history will appeal to all of those with an interest in enjoying history at first hand.
Dining at Sulgrave Manor is a very rare experience indeed. A champagne reception can be organised too and a local expert is on hand to give you a short, illustrated talk on the Washington connection. They will trace the history of the family from Lawrence who built the house in 1539 through his great-great grandson John, who emigrated to America in 1656 to George, the first President of the United States of America.
Guests will then be given an exclusive tour of the house and the largest UK collection of Washington memorabilia. Please note that guest numbers are strictly limited – Max 10. Althorp is delighted to be able to welcome groups to visit the House, Grounds and Exhibition. There are a number of unique opportunities that are exclusively available for groups only, including a traditional afternoon tea set in the beautiful State Dining Room as well as the chance to book private guided tours of the House outside of normal opening hours. The beautiful State Dining Room provides the setting for this exclusive occasion. The Dining Room, not normally open to the public, was known as the Great Dining Room and was added to the house in 1876. It was intended to be a replica of the ballroom at Buckingham Palace. The afternoon tea consists of a selection of handmade sandwiches, cakes and scones, with unlimited tea and coffee; it really is a perfect way to end your specially extended visit.

Private Tour
Enjoy a tour of the House by one of our experienced guides, one hour before the House opens for general admission. As only one group can take up this opportunity daily, it guarantees that you will be the only visitors in the grounds. Your group will be greeted by our guide on arrival, with each member of your group receiving a copy of our guidebook. Complimentary morning refreshments will also be available in the café once your tour is complete. From there you are free to explore the rest of the Exhibition and Grounds, revisiting the House if you wish.

Morning - American Connections tour with Blue Badge guide

Flore - John Adams family came from Flore - His great grandfather Thomas Adams lived in this pretty village. There are some wonderful shops and plenty of places to relax and take in the history.
Lamport - Architecturally, Lamport Hall is of Grade I importance. During the time of the Commonwealth, the Hall was developed from a Tudor Manor and is now best known for its classical frontage. The Hall contains a wealth of outstanding furniture, books and paintings collected by the Isham family. Most were bought during the third Baronet`s Grand Tour of Europe, in the 1670s. They include portraits by Van Dyck, Kneller, Lely and others. Henry Isham was also related to Thomas Jefferson.
Lamport Hall was also the home to the first garden gnome!
The Hall is open from April to October on Sundays and throughout August Sunday - Friday
Ecton - Benjamin Franklin`s ancestors all came from here. Franklin himself even visited a number of years later. The pub The Three Horseshoes is situated on the spot where his uncle`s smithy once stood and their graves are in the local church yard.
Grafton Underwood -. For those with an interest in military history, Grafton Underwood is a must. This picturesque village housed one of the most important USSAF bases during the Second World War. The station at Grafton was regarded as the most important Air base as it was from here that their first and last bombing missions of the Second World War flew. You can also pay your respects and visit the memorial to the American 8th Air Force.
Kelmarsh Hall – Nancy Lancaster, an American born designer, levied strong influence on the stately homes of Northamptonshire with the creation of the ‘country house look’. Lancaster’s designs can be seen in living colour at Kelmarsh Hall – where the ‘faded chintzy’ look became her trademark.
Carpetbagger Aviation Museum - The Carpetbagger Aviation Museum was formed in 1993 for the 50th Anniversary reunion of the USAAF’s 801st / 492nd Bomb Group (The Carpetbaggers) at Harrington. It is housed in the Group Operations Building on the Administration Site of the former Station 179 airfield at Harrington, Northamptonshire, England. Displays and exhibits within the museum depict the history of the airfield and vividly show the work carried out by the 801st (Provisional) / 492nd Bomb Group, especially during Operation Carpetbagger, and their secret missions to deliver agents and supplies to resistance groups in Occupied Europe during the Second World War.
Afternoon – Candlelight Tour of Rockingham Castle and Rushton Hall Hotel
Built by William the Conqueror, Rockingham Castle is the best preserved example of a Norman Castle in Britain. A Royal fortress for 450 years it has been a much-loved family home since 1544. Beautifully furnished rooms tell the story of its long history. Surrounded by 18 acres of widely varying gardens the Castle commands spectacular views of five counties. (Open May to September).

Accommodation - Talbot Hotel in Oundle.
The ghost of Mary Queen of Scots is said to haunt the Elizabethan Talbot Hotel. The oak staircase, and other parts of the building, were brought from the ruins of Fotheringhay Castle. It was down these steps that she walked to her execution. If all this sinister historical association puts you off, you needn`t worry, Queen Mary hasn`t been sighted for over a week now.
The hotel boasts oak beams, open fires and transomed windows. The intimate restaurant and cosy bar offer traditional British cuisine, fine wines and real ales. Day 6 – Historic Motorsport
If your passion is motorsport then a trip to Northamptonshire would not be complete without visiting the Home of UK Motorsport – Silverstone.
This spectacular venue is host to over 40 exhilarating Motor racing events every year. But if you are unlucky to miss one then don’t worry you can always take one of their driving experiences and drive around part of the circuit yourself! The museum houses five themed galleries covering War, Tournament, Self-Defence, Hunting and the arms and armour of the Orient, offering something to captivate every visitor – from Henry VIII`s tournament armour, the replica Edwardian Gun Room, or a chance to shoot a crossbow.
In addition to the galleries there is an exciting combination of spectacular displays, dramatic interpretations, live action events, interactive technology and thrilling exhibitions for the visitor to experience.
Opening hours: We’re open from 10am – 5pm throughout the year, except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Prices: Entry to the Royal Armouries is free but there is a charge for some events and activities.
